Introduction: At Willowtree Glamping, nestled in the heart of nature, we, Ciara and Derek Tiernan, have embarked on a journey of sustainability and eco-friendliness. Our commitment to protecting the planet is reflected in every aspect of our glamping site.
Sustainable Practices in Action: We believe in responsible waste management and pay for professional sorting of our waste, ensuring maximum recycling. Our eco-consciousness extends to the amenities we provide: refillable soap, shampoo, and conditioner bottles significantly reduce single-use plastics. Moreover, the water from our hot tubs is repurposed for watering trees, embodying our water conservation efforts. In our quest for sustainability, we choose eco-friendly materials wherever possible.
Building with Nature: Our accommodations are a testament to sustainable building. Constructed on-site using locally sourced materials, including reclaimed timber, each cabin is a symbol of eco-conscious construction. Over-insulating our cabins not only reduces energy consumption but also minimizes the carbon footprint. We made the conscious decision to not supply towels, reducing the carbon impact associated with washing unused towels. Our focus is on reducing packaging and using bulk cleaning supplies with reusable bottles, drastically cutting down on plastic waste.
Harmony with the Natural World: Our connection to nature is deep-rooted. The boundary walls of our site are crafted from natural stone sourced from our land, and the walkways are lined with locally sourced gravel. We strictly avoid chemical treatments, opting for hand-weeding our paths. Over the past three years, we have planted over 2,000 native trees and continue to do so. The flora we’ve introduced, including shrubs and flowers, attracts wildlife and bees, fostering a thriving mini-ecosystem.
Community and Environment: As part of our local community engagement, we actively participate in keeping our environment clean, even during our walks. We believe in leading by example and contributing to the well-being of our community.
Our Vision for the Future: Looking ahead, we’re planning to invest in solar panels and continue our efforts in tree and shrub planting. Our goal is to further reduce plastic usage on-site and enhance our contribution to a greener future.

Challenges and Triumphs: One of our challenges has been encouraging guests to recycle properly. To address this, we now ensure all waste is sorted professionally. Another significant change was our decision to stop providing towels, which has positively impacted the environment. We’re especially proud of planting 2,000 trees, constructing cabins with 70% recycled materials, and maintaining our land without chemical sprays, thanks to our dedicated gardening team.
